Hello Everyone.

Thank you again for the opportunity to join you at the Temecula Small Wine Growers Association meeting last week. It’s inspiring to meet so many growers interested in learning more about soil health, regenerative viticulture, and practical vineyard stewardship.

As discussed, the RVF One Block Challenge™ is designed to be a practical, grower-led, scalable initiative to support growers with regenerative practices. It is a program of the Regenerative Viticulture Foundation (RVF), a UK-based non-profit dedicated to advancing regenerative practices in vineyards around the world. The program launched in Paso Robles in February of 2025.

1BC participants select a portion of their vineyard (whether it’s one row, one acre, or ten), and implement at least three regenerative ‘Core’ practices. Participants track outcomes using simple, observational field tests such and soil assessments. We also ask that participants work toward reduced or minimal tillage practices and avoid glyphosate or systemic herbicides in the areas dedicated to the trial. There is no cost to participate. Certification is neither a goal nor a requirement of the 1BC.

This field guide provides all growers with a practical, repeatable protocol for establishing a baseline, tracking change, and comparing observations of biological systems over time. It includes an annual testing schedule, a Haney soil health test, a soil compaction test, a field water infiltration test, a soil slake test, earthworm and soil macrobiodiversity counts, plant sap analysis, and field notes with critical points of influence. 1. Take 4 baseline field tests of your trial and control blocks (how to and links to videos in the handbook).

June 1st - Upload baseline and soil test results at this link: Data Reporting Form

Implement 3 required practices or expand on your 2025 practices: eliminate synthetic herbicide; minimal till; plant a diverse cover crop.
